Men in heels march for anti-rape message
NewsMen in heels march for anti-rape message : ANCHORAGE, Alaska – A few dozen men seeking to raise awareness for sexual assault violence against women tried to walk a mile in their shoes Friday — literally.

Among the participants — some burly and others bearded — in the fourth annual "Walk a Mile in her Shoes" event at the University of Alaska Anchorage was the head of Alaska State Troopers, Col. Keith Mallard, who slipped out of one of his red suede peep-toe shoes during the walk.

"I had a blowout," Mallard said sheepishly. "It didn't hinder my progress any. I just had to pull to the side and get a tire change."

The men teetered precariously along the mile-long route, trying to raise money for a local nonprofit that supports sexual assault victims. Donations to Standing Together Against Rape will go toward banishing sexual assaults and other acts of violence against women.

The men were game, even if it meant nearly tripping over their own stilettos.

Vashon Hilliard, whose work involves helping the disabled, stuffed his feet into a colleague's black patent leather pumps. The shoes were a snug fit, but Hilliard didn't let that stop him.

"I just decided it's for a great cause, and why not?" he said.

"Men want to make a public statement that they detest sexual violence," said Keeley Olson, STAR's program manager. "A lot of them have told me that they walk for their sisters, they walk for their mothers, they walk for their daughters. They walk because they care about women."

Amusement factor aside, the underlying message was serious. Signs with messages including "No Means No!", "Got Consent???", "Shatter the Silence," and "Alaskans Can End Sexual Violence" bobbed along in the hands of participants.

Walt Monegan, former head of the state troopers, participated in what he said people were calling old lady shoes. "I'm old, so it's OK," he said.

Monegan, who now heads the Alaska Native Justice Center, said he was taking part because the issues of sexual assault need to be highlighted.

"Sexual assault for some folks is still kind of a sensitive, dark issue," he said. "By bringing this in a humorous light, it eases the acceptance and discussion of it. So, any way we can bring it to the surface is a good thing."

The unnamed journalist in a local Arabic language daily in Saudi Arabia’s eastern region said he had decided to sue the two journalists from another newspaper because they likened him to Gaddafi on Facebook.

“The two said they were surprised by his decision because they were only joking with him… but they also noted there is a strong resemblance between that journalist and Gaddafi, especially his hair and eyes,” Sabq daily said. “Efforts by friends are now under way to settle the problem peacefully.”

Man jailed for feeding mother's kitten to dog
NewsMan jailed for feeding mother's kitten to dog : An Australian man was jailed for six weeks for feeding his mother's kitten to his dog, the Northern Territory News reported Saturday.

Keith Allen Waldock, 30, was "frustrated" that his mother allowed her seven cats to live inside the house in Batchelor, 62 miles (100km) south of the Northern Territory capital of Darwin, the Darwin Magistrates Court heard.

Prosecutor Ben Humphris said on February 25 Waldock threw the 12-week-old kitten at his ridgeback pitbull cross which was trained to kill cats.

Waldock's 13-year-old niece watched as the kitten was mauled to death.

Friday in Darwin Magistrates Court Humphris submitted photos of the "half masticated" kitten as evidence. But Magistrate Tanya Fong Lim declined to look at the images.

Waldock was sentenced to six weeks in prison back-dated to February 26 when he was first remanded in custody and will be released from custody Saturday.

Shoemaker sues over red sole design
NewsShoemaker sues over red sole design : A French shoemaker has sued a rival in a New York City court, saying the competitor is unfairly copying its line of women's shoes with red soles.

The suit cites the popularity of its shoes with celebrities including Sarah Jessica Parker, Scarlett Johansson and Halle Berry.

Christian Louboutin S.A. filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan against Yves Saint Laurent S.A.S., another French company based in Paris.

The lawsuit says designer Christian Louboutin originated the Red Sole logo trademark nearly 20 years ago. It says he created the idea when he painted red nail polish on the black soles of a pair of women's shoes.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

A telephone message left with an Yves Saint Laurent spokeswoman on Thursday hasn't been returned.

Deer stands guard over goose nest in cemetery
NewsDeer stands guard over goose nest in cemetery : BUFFALO, New York (Reuters) – A deer has been standing watch for several days over a female goose nesting in a city cemetery, a scene normally reserved for a children's movie.

"People always want to turn it into a Disney story and in this case it's not far off," said Gina Browning, director of the Erie County SPCA.

For at least four days, the buck stood guard near the nest of a Canada goose as she sits on her eggs inside a large urn at Forest Lawn cemetery, home to the remains of President Millard Fillmore and rock icon Rick James.

"He does appear to be guarding the goose, as it were," Erie County SPCA Wildlife Administrator Joel Thomas said. "He's within touching distance of her -- there's no doubt what's going on."

The deer, which he said looks like a buck that has shed its antlers, has not strayed from his post.

Employees at the cemetery were alerted to the situation after the animal positioned itself between the bird and an employee of a company that traps and relocates geese, which Thomas said have become a messy problem in large numbers.

"When he approached the bird with a net, the deer puts itself between him and the bird, and he's repeated that behavior for some time," he said.

Typically positioning himself broadside to any car or passerby who comes near the nest, the deer stares intently until the potential aggressor moves on, he said.

Why exactly the deer has chosen to champion a bird of a different feather is a complicated question, Thomas said. While interdependence among species in the wild is not unheard of, Thomas said whatever is causing this animal kingdom alliance is anybody's guess.

"From a human standpoint we can fill in a lot of blanks but it doesn't mean we're right," he said. "Does he know she's nesting? I don't know. Is he going to leave when the chicks hatch? I don't know."

One thing is clear: It could go on for some time.

The gestation period for a Canada goose is up to 31 days, Thomas said, with the nesting season only just beginning. While normally both the male and female share the task of keeping the eggs warm, the expectant mother at Forest Lawn appears not to have that luxury.

"If the deer is determined, he's going to be on the job for at least three weeks," Thomas said.

Devotion rather than emotion seems to be driving the buck.

"The deer and the goose are not in love," Thomas said.
